DESCRIPTION

Michigan State University Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program is pleased to offer Certificate Programs in Molecular Laboratory Diagnostics, Immunodiagnostics and Clinical Flow Cytometry, Managing Biomedical Laboratory Operations, and Transfusion Service Management. These programs are designed for working medical laboratory professionals in need of updating their skills and knowledge to meet the demands of their jobs or to increase their knowledge in the direction of any of these certificate programs.  Individuals working in veterinary, forensic, industrial, and pharmaceutical laboratories will also find this content exciting and pertinent.  Completion of the three course sequence is required for any of these certificate programs, though individual course enrollment is possible with appropriate prerequisites.  The didactic courses are taught online through the use of a learning management system called ANGEL which is an acronym for "A New Global Environment for Learning".  Courses are comprised of modules of reading assignments, videos, PowerPoint slide presentations, and chatting and threaded e-mail exercises.  The average student should be able to complete one module per week, which should require a high speed internet connection, computer and between 4-6 hours per week.

Individuals seeking certification in molecular biology or immunology from the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) will find these courses provide solid preparation for national credentialing examinations.  However, these courses are not a prerequisite or a requirement for the certifying exams.  To determine your eligibility, contact the Agency of your choice.  These courses will also be applicable to those requiring continuing education credits for relicensing or recertification.  These certificate programs also provide valuable preparation for work in modern medical and biological laboratories for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in the biological sciences.
